Vet Nurse Training

Highgate Vets is a Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) accredited training practice which means that we have been approved to provide high quality, standardised tuition for trainees who are studying towards their veterinary nursing qualification whilst working in practice. We only offer a single trainee post at a time, to give them maximum attention and experience and Lauren Rigg is our very able and enthusiastic student at present.

If you are considering a career in veterinary nursing, please visit the RCVS website which lists other suitable training practices.

Work Experience

At Highgate Vets we realise the value of real-life work experience within a veterinary practice for current and prospective students wishing to study veterinary medicine or veterinary nursing. Therefore we are pleased to be able to offer one week placements to suitable applicants. Students must be over the age of 14, so be in year 10 or above at secondary school.

As a busy practice with a trainee nurse in place, we are only able to offer one work experience placement at a time. These can be arranged through the school or university or independently by the student.

To arrange a work experience placement, please send an email to for the attention of Elizabeth Mason with the dates that you would prefer and a little bit of information about yourself.

Full time Registered Veterinary Nurse

A friendly and enthusiastic RVN is required to join our excellent team in delivering high levels of customer service and patient care.  The successful applicant will be well organised, efficient, highly motivated and able to work independently and as part of a team.  The requirements of the role offer great variety with inpatient, theatre and lab nursing, and some reception work.  Therefore, an ability to prioritise, plan ahead and multitask is essential.  We are looking to vastly grow our nurse clinics so you could be an integral part of this, and all of our plans to continually improve the nursing care we provide.  Confidence in completing practice administration, such as insurance forms, would also be beneficial.

We are looking for someone to work full time, up to 38 hours per week across four days. Saturday morning duties, evenings and weekends on call are shared 1 in 6 between our fantastic team of registered nurses.  RVNs are only called out in an emergency as our vets answer the phone calls and carry out inpatient care out of hours.  One evening of reception duty will be required each week.

We are a 100% small animal practice fully dedicated to the veterinary care of pets within the South Lakes.  We are a RCVS VN training practice with silver Cat Friendly accreditation and we are also on the Rabbit Friendly RWAF Vet list.

CPD is strongly encouraged with a personal annual allowance provided.  Applicants would ideally have a full driving licence and their own car to enable moving essential supplies between our two RCVS accredited clinics.

To join our happy team, please send a CV and covering letter in an email marked for the attention of Elizabeth Mason to .

Approaches from local RVNs would be treated with the upmost confidence.
