Intramammary Infusion Technique

TWO KEY POINTS

1 - Sterile preparation of the teat end
2 - Correct infusion technique of the tubes
If not done properly mastitis could be caused at drying off, or existing mastitis made worse.

STERILE PREPARATION OF TEAT END

  • Pre-dip teat with hypochlorite solution
  • Ensure teat is clean and dry
  • Clean teat end by wiping with alcohol impregnated wipes or cotton wool soaked in alcohol. Discoloured wipes indicate persistent contamination
  • Allow to dry
  • Wipe far teats first, near teats lasts
  • Continue until wipe is clean

INFUSION TECHNIQUE
The latest information suggests that only the very tip of the tube needs to be inserted into the teat canal. This ensures the protective keratin layer is not bypassed, reducing mastitis in the dry period.

  • Infuse near teats first, far teats last
  • Partial insertion also ensures the teat canal is not excessively dilated, helping prevent bacteria from entering the mammary gland
  • After antibiotic infusion, dip the teat in a post milking teat dip
