Mike Marron (Pfizer) discussed the theory of dry cow therapy and
how the use of Orbeseal fitted into that theory. The NMR rep demonstrated
how milk records could be used to analyse the efficiency of dry
cow therapy and Julie (Northern Feed Solutions) discussed the importance
of dry cow diets.
Mark Stott demonstrated taking milk samples for bacteriology, using
the Californian Milk Test and the application of dry cow tubes.
He said Clients using Orbeseal with good results pay great
attention to detail. The cows for Orbeseal treatment are chosen
carefully and the tubes are applied hygienically. Blanket treatment
using a combination of antibiotics and Orbeseal has worked well
on several farms. Although the cost of dry cow therapy is doubled,
it soon pays dividends when the amount of mastitis in new calved
cows is reduced.
Several clients said although they had not heard anything new at
the meeting, it was a good revision reminding them of what they
should know!
