Dry Cow Meeting Success

Last month, the practice joined representatives from Pfizer Animal Health, NMR and Northern Feed Solutions to give presentations on dry cow management.

Fifteen farmers met at Lupton Hall Farm with kind permission from David Barton.

Mike Marron (Pfizer) discussed the theory of dry cow therapy and how the use of Orbeseal fitted into that theory. The NMR rep demonstrated how milk records could be used to analyse the efficiency of dry cow therapy and Julie (Northern Feed Solutions) discussed the importance of dry cow diets.

Mark Stott demonstrated taking milk samples for bacteriology, using the Californian Milk Test and the application of dry cow tubes. He said “Clients using Orbeseal with good results pay great attention to detail. The cows for Orbeseal treatment are chosen carefully and the tubes are applied hygienically. Blanket treatment using a combination of antibiotics and Orbeseal has worked well on several farms. Although the cost of dry cow therapy is doubled, it soon pays dividends when the amount of mastitis in new calved cows is reduced.”

Several clients said although they had not heard anything new at the meeting, it was a good revision reminding them of what they should know!

Westmorland County Show

Once again we will have a stand at the Westmorland County Show on Thursday 8th of September 2005 at Lane Farm, Crooklands.

Just for a bit of fun, to test your knowledge, can you tell us what disease causing organism is shown in the picture? If you come along to our stand and tell us the correct answer, you’ll win a small prize there and then and be entered into a prize draw.

Kendal Torch Light Procession

We’re teaming up with local children’s author Helen McGlasson (writer of the “Frog the Dog” series of books) to take part in the torch light procession on 9th September in Kendal. The entry is called “Sea Dogs”. Come and see some of the vets and staff as you’ve never seen them before!
