Course Schedule
The four day course takes place at Highgate Veterinary Centre and on farm.

Day 1:

The course begins with a lecture on the anatomy and function of the cow’s reproductive tract including demonstrations with post mortem specimens.

Participants will gain understanding of the position, shape and size of the reproductive tract, how the cervix should be located and where and how the AI gun should be placed.

Grasping the cervix
and positioning the AI gun.

Signs of oestrus and the timing of AI are discussed.

In the afternoon participants feel inside a cow, and with guidance identify structures of the reproductive tract by touch alone.

By the end of the first day participants are able to locate and grasp the cervix.

Days 2 & 3
Under guidance from Mark and an AI technician participants learn (through plenty of practice) how to introduce the AI gun through the cervix and into the uterus and are trained how to handle frozen semen and prepare it for insemination.

Legislation regarding the storage of frozen semen is discussed.

Day 4
On the final day participants simulate AI using gel.
Ultrasonography is used to ensure that the gel is placed in the correct position within the reproductive tract.

At the end of the course
Participants are able to inseminate cattle correctly and safely.
Participants are told to “go forth and multiply” - and are usually rewarded with plenty of calves within a few months.
Participants are awarded a certificate of attendance - legally required when applying for a license for a semen store.

By investing in DIY training and equipment participants can save between £600 and £800 in the first year over the cost of using a technician. ( Saving based on 100 cows ).
