Advice for our clients on Parvovirus infections

There have been some confirmed cases of Parvovirus in this area in the last 2 months (December 2011).

  1. Young puppies or unvaccinated dogs are most at risk.
  2. An up to date vaccination programme should provide good protection.
  3. Signs of vomiting followed by watery diarrhoea often with blood, especially if the dog is dull or off colour should be treated as suspicious – please phone for advice.
  4. Good hygiene in the home, garden and on the 'streets' is important to reduce the spread.
  5. The virus is difficult to kill. Dilute bleach (1 part household bleach to 30 parts water) or veterinary DEFRA approved disinfectant such as the Trigene used throughout our surgery are needed to kill the virus.

If you have any concerns or worries please phone Highgate Veterinary Clinic on 01539 721344 for advice.
