Snuggles - Rabbit with overgrown teeth

Here I am putting a breathing tube into Snuggles’ windpipe so that he can be given anaesthetic gas and oxygen whilst he is asleep.

Snuggles came to see me because his teeth had grown too long! He was having difficulty eating carrots and grooming himself. Rabbit teeth grow throughout their lives and can cause problems if they do not continually wear down.

I clipped his teeth, which is effective but can hurt sometimes and would need doing every month. Since Snuggles is only a year old I advised that it would be best if his incisors were removed.

Rabbits can be very sensitive to general anaesthetics so we take great care to make them as safe as possible. Rabbit teeth have very big roots, which can break during removal.

Fortunately Snuggles’ teeth came out well and he was soon up eating dandelions.

Snuggles will be fine with no front teeth, but will need his carrots sliced up for him from now on.
