Article from Veterinary Review:

Veterinary nurse, Claire Flanagan, of Highgate Veterinary Clinic in Kendal, pictured after completing the Great North Swim 2008(one mile in Lake Windermere in 15degC water!).

Claire swam in aid of the Noistar Thai Animal Rescue Foundation that supports the Koh Tao Animal Clinic on the Island of Koh Tao in the Gulf of Thailand.

Claire said: "Did I enjoy it? Absolutely not! Will I do it next year? Absolutely! But this time the boyfriend's being roped in too. Thanks to all the sponsors and companies that helped me.”

Well done Claire!

Claire

I joined Highgate Vets in 1996. Previously, I worked at a boarding kennels and cattery. I was responsible for looking after brood mares and exercising livery horses and newly broken youngsters.

I trained to become a veterinary nurse at Myerscough College and qualified as a listed V.N. in the summer of 2000.

My work includes looking after patients in our hospital, monitoring anaesthetics during operations and advising clients on post operative care. I am in charge of the pharmacy which includes ordering medicines and ensuring their correct storage. My work in our small laboratory includes testing blood samples and examining specimens under the microscope.

I also go out onto farms, helping our farmers to maintain their medicine records and medicine storage.

When I'm not at work my great passion is rock climbing.
I mostly climb in the Lakes and at the Kendal Climbing Wall but recently I've been to the Himalayas. I enjoy walking my young lurcher "Alfie" and walking the fells with my friends.
